Great Ocean Road

Thanks to the advice of the receptionist of our camping in Warrnambool, we started very early in the morning driving on the Great Ocean Road to avoid loads of tourist busses. Then these busses bring all the tourists from Melbourne to the same popular spots, we wanted to see. The first stop was at Bay of Islands. We could enjoy this place totally alone without anybody. We were so happy, that the sun appears between the clouds, just at that time we arrived there. We continued to the Bay of Martyrs, another great spot, we could enjoy almost alone. At the Grotto Scenic Lookout, we were alone again. This is a small nice lookout with a view of the sea through a whole in the rock. Farther, we went to the “London Bridge», a lookout with a view of a stone formation which looks like a bridge. This bridge was broken in 1991, so we could only see half of it now. After the London Bridge we went to the most popular spot: The Twelve Apostels. This place is prepared for a lot of tourists with his huge viewing platforms and a big parking lot. Most of the people come by tourist busses, have time to take their photos within 15minutes and leave for the next attraction. We were lucky to be early this morning, so we could enjoy the view of these 12 stone columns in the ocean almost alone within more time than just 15minute. After this very impressive stop, we continued to the Loch Ard Gorge, where we enjoyed a nice stroll along the very windy coastal landscape. Our lunch we had at the beach of the Gibson Steps, a very windy but wonderful beach. So now, we have done all the famous spots along the very touristic part of the Great Ocean Road. We continued now a bit more relaxed along the Great Ocean Road to our next camping at Kennet River. On the way we drove through an eucalyptus forest (with Koalas up in the trees) to the Cape Otway and we stopped at the Apollo Bay. Before our dinner, we went to the beach close by and looked after Koalas again. This time we just counted three sleeping ones in some eucalyptus trees. They are really cute, and we’re always happy to find some of these animals in the forest. Because our camping was so close to the beach, we got up early in the morning to see the sunrise over the sea. We were sitting at the beach, snuggled in our woollen blankets and just enjoying the sun rising. The view was stunning! I cannot describe it better in words. When we came back to our camping for breakfast, a green parrot just flew to Claudia’s shoulder and gave her a “good morning kiss”. This bird was so cute and tame. We all had the chance to pet him.😉 We continued driving to Lorne, a small village with a nice beach for surfer beginners. On the way to the Bells Beach we stopped at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery to have a fresh and “Yammee” Ice Cream. The Bells Beach is wonderful and a great surfer spot for advanced surfers. Because we could not surf, we enjoyed our lunch at the beach, had a bath, looked at nice surfer bodies and just chilled a bit. Yes, we know, this was a lot of text for a small part of our travels. But the Great Ocean Road was a very nice adventure with awesome landscape. It just had to be written down in this length.

Because we already have been in Melbourne before, we tried to pass through Melbourne as fast as possible. It was not so easy as we thought. Because at the time we entered onto the Highway it was already 5pm, Rush hour! After almost 1 hour with high traffic, we finally arrived in Dandenong on the other side of Melbourne. We stopped there to buy some wine, before we drove to our next camping for free in the middle of nowhere close to the small village “Loch”.

Dank dem Tipp der Empfangsdame vom Campingplatz in Warrnambool sind wir früh losgefahren, um die Great Ocean Road zu starten, bevor die Touristenbusse all ihre Gruppen ebenfalls zu den beliebten Plätzen bringen. Unser erster Stopp war die Bay of Islands. Genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt liess sich die Sonne zwischen den Wolken hindurch blicken und wir genossen den Aussichtspunkt ganz für uns alleine. Dann gings weiter zur Bay of Martyrs, auch ein wunderschöner Ort, aber wir mussten den Platz bereits mit einigen anderen Touristen teilen. Den Grotto Scenic Lookout konnten wir ohne Gesellschaft anschauen. Dies war ein toller kleiner ‘’Balkon’’ fast am Wasser mit Blick durch ein Felsloch auf das Meer. Weiter gings zur London Bridge, eine Steinbrücke im Meer und gut sichtbar vom dazugehörigen Lookout. Die Brücke muss früher einmal länger gewesen sein, denn sie sieht nicht wirklich wie die London Bridge aus. Wir fanden heraus, dass im Jahr 1991 ein Teil der Brücke abgebrochen ist. Nach der London Bridge gings zu den berühmten Twelve Apostles. Dieser Ort war speziell für Touristen hergerichtet. Die meisten wurden mit einem Bus hingefahren, hatten 15min Zeit um Fotos zu schiessen und gingen dann weiter zur nächsten Attraktion. Wir hatten zum Glück etwas mehr Zeit, um die verschiedenen grossen Steinsäulen im Meer anzuschauen und hatten die Plattform noch fast für uns alleine. Nach weiteren 5min fahren kamen wir zu der Loch Ard Gorge. Dort machten wir einen Spaziergang und konnten die windige Küstenlandschaft geniessen. Unsere Mittagspause machten wir am Strand von den Gibson Steps. Trotz starkem Wind genossen wir unsere feinen Sandwiches. Dies waren die berühmten Stopps die jeder macht auf der Great Ocean Road. Wunderschön, aber eben sehr touristisch. Nach einer schönen Fahrt durch sehr hohe Eucalyptuswälder zum Cape Otway und einem kurzen Stopp in Apollo Bay fuhren wir mit dem Sonnenuntergang zu unserem Campingplatz in Kennet River. Nach kurzer Koalasuche und einem Strandbesuch, genossen wir unser Abendessen und planten den nächsten Tag. Unser Campingplatz lag direkt am Strand, deshalb standen wir am nächsten Morgen früh auf und bestaunten den wundervollen Sonnenaufgang. Da es eher kalt war kuschelten wir uns in unsere Wolldecken. Zurück bei unserem «Camperly» bekam Claudia ein unerwartetes ‘’Gute Morgen Küsschen’’ von einem kleinen grünen Papagei. Dieser war soooo süss und so zutraulich. Wir konnten ihn sogar streicheln. 😊 Weiter gings nach Lorne, einem kleinen Ort ebenfalls direkt am Strand und perfekt für Anfänger-Surfer. Auf dem Weg zur Bells Beach, machen wir eine kurze Glacepause bei der Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. Die Glace war so frisch und Yammee.Der Bells Beach ist wunderschön und ebenfalls ein sehr beliebter Ort für Surfer, jedoch hier eher für Fortgeschrittene geeignet. Wir als Nicht-Surfer genossen die Aussicht, den Strand und nach dem Baden, unser Mittagessen. Nun, dies war die Great Ocean Road. Ja, wir wissen es, viel Text für einen kurzen Zeitabschnitt, aber die Great Ocean Road war ein wunderbares Erlebnis mit unbeschreiblich toller Küstenlandschaft.

Da wir zuvor schon in Melbourne waren, versuchten wir möglichst schnell hindurch zu fahren. Das war jedoch nicht ganz einfach, denn als wir auf dem Highway fuhren war gerade 17.00 Uhr. Nach einer Stunde Stau haben wir es irgendwie trotzdem hingekriegt und erreichten Dandenong am anderen Ende von Melbourne. Dort machten wir einen kurzen Stopp, um Wein einzukaufen und dann gings weiter zu unserem Gratis-Campingplatz in der Nähe des Dörfchens «Loch».
