Eastern Taiwan – Taitung

Abends um 8.00 Uhr haben wir die Bethlehem Mission gefunden, die wir Dank Empfehlung von Martin um Unterkunft angefragt haben. Dort lebt der Schweizer Augustin seit über 50 Jahren. Als erstes hat uns Suli, Augustin’s Hund begutachtet. Zum Glück hatte Augustin noch Reste vom Abendessen für uns, da wir (vor allem Claudia) fast am Verhungern waren. Am Nächsten Tag haben wir dann noch die anderen Hausbewohner kennen gelernt. Es gab jeden Morgen ein riesen Frühstücksbuffet mit gutem selbstgemachtem Brot. 😊 Nach dem Frühstück durften wir 2 Velo’s ausleihen und fuhren damit auf der bekannten Veloroute um Taitung. Die toll präparierte Veloroute führte uns neben der alten Zugstrecke zum Fluss, zum Forest Park und zum Ozean. Es war wunderschön.

Am darauffolgenden Tag wollten wir etwas schneller unterwegs sein, deshalb mieteten wir einen Scooter! 😊 Wir fuhren die Ostküste bis nach Doulan, genossen den Strand, machten tolle Fotos und assen in einem Indian-Restaurant ein super Curry. Mit uns am Tisch sass Tim aus Californien. Er reist ganz alleine durch Taiwan auch mit Hilfe vom Lonely Planet. Nach der feinen Stärkung fuhren wir weiter nach Donghe. Dort startete eine schöne, kurvige Passstrasse. Natascha war nicht mehr zu stoppen, sie verfiel total in Kruuser-Töff-Laune. Ganz unerwartet mussten wir nach kurzer Zeit wieder abbremsen, da die Strasse von Affen besetzt wurde. Natürlich mussten wir Fotos machen. Affen in freier Wildnis ausserhalb eines Zoo’s, das hatten wir bisher noch nie gesehen. Danach gings ca. 1h durch den schönen Dschungel und vielen Obstplantagen (Orangen, Guave, Ananas, usw.) bergauf und bergab. Fast pünktlich schafften wir es zum Abendessen.

Am nächsten Morgen durften wir mit Augustin und seinem Freund Thierry sein Land in den Bergen begutachten, welches er mit vielen Obstbäumen und einer eingeborenen Familie teilte. Wir mussten mit dem Auto dorthin fahren, da es ziemlich weit oben in der Bergen lag. Die Aussicht war absolut fantastisch und die frischen Früchte super fein! Nach Unkraut jäten, Bäume richten und Mittagessen mit den Ureinwohnern fuhren wir pünktlich aufs Sonntagsbebet (zumindest für Augustin) zurück zum Haus. Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir mit Wäsche waschen, Handy für Natascha kaufen, da sie ihr altes am Tag zuvor auf den Boden schmiss (grrr) und Bier trinken.

 

In the evening at around 8pm we arrived at the Bethlehem Mission in Taitung. Thanks Martin, our friend from Switzerland, we asked there, if we could stay for some nights. Augustin, also from Switzerland, lives there since over 50 years. After his dog Suli has checked us with a critical eye, Augustin welcomed us in a friendly way. We were lucky, then there were still some leftovers from the dinner, we could eat, else (especially Claudia) we would have died, because we were so hungry. 😉 

After the breakfast, the next day, we explored Taitung and his surroundings by bike. We could borrow two bikes from Augustin. The bike trails were great prepared and we drove along the old railway to the river, through the forest park and to the ocean coast.

We wanted to be a bit faster and to explore more from the east coast of Taiwan. So, we rented a scooter we could use for 24hours. We drove along the coast to Doulan. There we went to the beach, took some funny pictures, and ate a delicious curry in an Indian restaurant. In this restaurant we met Tim from California. He was travelling alone in Taiwan and reading the Lonely Planet as well. That’s why we met him in the same restaurant. 😊 After the lunch, we continued driving along the east coast to Donghe. There we took a curvy mountain road through the jungle and a lot of fruit trees (like orange, guave, custard apples, etc.) to Fuli. It took us around 1 hour and Natascha was in her preferred cruiser motorbike mood (even though we were only driving a scooter). Suddenly we had to stop once, because there where soo many monkeys on the road. Of course, we had to take pictures, as we have never seen monkey’s in a real life before outside a zoo. Almost on time, we reached our “home” at Augustin’s place for dinner.

The next morning, we went with Augustin and his friend Thierry to his land up in the mountain, where he planted a lot of fruit trees. He shares his land with an indigenous family, which lives there in a small house. The view from there was amazing and the fresh fruits we could try delicious. We helped weeding, to stabilize the tree’s and we ate lunch with the people from there. In the afternoon we went back to Taitung, because Augustin had to go to church. So, we spend the rest of the day washing our clothes, buying a new cell phone for Natascha, because her phone was broken the day before (grrr) and drinking beer.
