Hobbiton and Rotorua

2 Minuten von unserem Campingplatz (Brock’s Place) entfernt, war die neuseeländische Touristenattraktion Nr. 1, das Hobbiton Movie Set. An diesem Ort wurden die beiden Filme The Lord of the Rings film trilogy und The Hobbit film series gedreht. Wir hatten eine etwa zweistündige Führung durch das wunderschöne und herzige Hobbit-Dörfchen. Danach fuhren wir nach Rotorua, einem sehr touristischen Städtchen. Rotorua ist bekannt für seine geothermische und vulkanische Aktivität, brodelnde Schlammtümpel und maorische Kultur. Überall brodelt und dampft es aus dem Boden und der Geruch nach Schwefel ist allgegenwärtig. Am Abend fanden wir in Rotorua einen Nightmarket mit Essensstände aus aller Welt. Wie wir dies bereits in Taiwan geübt haben, probierten wir uns durch diverse Essensstände. Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir zum wahrscheinlich eindrücklichsten Park im Zentrum der Nordinsel «Wai-o-Tapu» (heiliges Wasser). In allen Farben präsentieren sich hier die Seen und Teiche und viele Geysire sind noch aktiv. Unterwegs nach Taupo fanden wir eine Farm huka honey hive mit vielen verschiedenen Honigprodukten. Wir probierten uns durch den ganzen Laden, und kauften uns schliesslich auch eine Büchse Honig für unser tägliches Frühstücksbrot. Keine 10 Autofahr-Minuten danach, fuhren wir an den beeindruckenden Huka-Fällen vorbei. Unglaubliche 220’000 Liter Wasser rauschen pro Sekunde den Wasserfall hinunter. Den restlichen Nachmittag verbrachten wir in Taupo am schönen See und im Städtchen mit vielen verschiedenen Läden, die gerade ihren Ausverkauf hatten.

Two minutes away from our Campground (Brock’s Place), there is the tourist attraction Nr. 1 in New Zealand: The Hobbiton Movie Set. This location was used for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy und The Hobbit film series. We booked a 2-hours guided tour through this wonderful and very cute village with all these colourful hobbit-holes, the day before. After this tour, we drove to Rotorua, a very touristic town. Rotorua is famous for its geothermal and volcanic activity, hot mud pools and the Maori culture. Everywhere it bubbles and steams from the ground and the smell of sulphur is omnipresent. In the evening, we found a night market with food from all over the world. It remains us to our great night market experiences in Taiwan, so we had to try many things. The next day we visited the most impressive park we’ve ever seen: «Wai-o-Tapu» (sacred waters). In this area many hot springs and mud pools appear in different colours and several geysers are still active. On the way to Taupo we bumped into a honey farm huka honey hive, where we could try a lot of different honey types. Finally, we bought one for our breakfast bread every morning. Around 10minutes driving, we passed by the impressive Huka falls. The volume of the falls is unbelievable 220’000 litres of water per second. The rest of the afternoon, we spend shopping in Taupo and chilling at the nice lake of Taupo.

Tongariro Nationalpark

Unser nächstes Ziel war der Tongariro Nationalpark. Früh morgens um 6.30 Uhr wurden wir mit einem Shuttlebus abgeholt und zum Startpunkt vom Tongariro Alpine Crossing gebracht. Diese 6-stündige sehr eindrückliche Wanderung führte uns über den Tongariro Vulkan und einige Krater von schlafenden Vulkanen. Mit dem Wetter hatten wir Glück. Einzig auf dem höchsten Punkt von 1886 m.ü.M. war es so neblig, dass man nur noch die Person vor einem sehen konnte. Zurück im Campingplatz Base Camp of Tongariro, genossen wir die Sonne und entspannten unsere Beine.

Our next destination was the Tongariro National park. Early in the morning at 6.30am, we took a shuttle bus to the starting point from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail. We walked 6 hours, across the Tongariro Vulcan and some old volcanic craters. It was breath-taking. At the top point (1886 meters over the sea) it was very foggy, but the rest of the track was perfect. Back at the campground, we enjoyed the sun and gave our legs a break.
