The Catlins

Von Dunedin aus fuhren wir der Southern Scenic Route entlang an der schönen Ostküste bis nach Invercargill. Unterwegs machten wir einen Halt am Purakaunui Strand und bei dem kleinen aber feinen Purakaunui Wasserfall. Kurz vor Invercargill fuhren wir zum Curio Bay mit der Hoffnung, nochmals Pinguine zu sehen. Leider ohne Erfolg. Ein Einheimischer erzählte uns, dass an diesem Strand nur 6 Pinguine wohnen und vier davon ihr Nest im Moment nicht verlassen, weil sie am Brüten sind! Da diese zwei Pinguine, meistens erst nach Sonnenuntergang, von der Futtersuche im Meer zurückkommen, wollten wir nicht warten und wir fuhren deshalb weiter nach Invercargill. Zum Trost gab es dann noch ein Glace! 😊

The Southern Scenic Route leads us along the nice east coast to Invercargill. On the way, we stopped at Purakaunui Beach and the small but nice Purakaunui falls. We also stopped at the Curio Bay, in the hope that we’ll see Little Penguins again. But unfortunately, there were no Penguins. A local guide told us, that only 6 Penguins are living at this place, and 4 of them are hidden in their nests for breeding. We would have had a chance to see 2 penguins when they come back from foraging after sunset. But we didn’t want to wait that long, so we continued to Invercargill. For our comfort, disappointed we haven’t seen any animals today, we allow us eating an ice cream. 😊

Invercargill

In Invercargill auf der Halbinsel Otatara fanden wir unseren nächsten Campingplatz. Am nächsten Morgen, nach langem Ausschlafen, machten wir eine kleine Sightseeingtour durch Invercargill. Wir liefen durch den Queenspark und sahen den wunderschönen Rosengarten. Wir warfen einen Blick auf den alten 42.6m hohen Wasserturm, ein Wahrzeichen von Invercargill und genossen im Cafe von ‘’The seriously good chocolate company’’ einen Kaffee und eine feine heisse Schokolade. Danach fuhren wir zum ‘’the Bluff’’, eine weitere Halbinsel von Invercargill. Wir liefen entlang der schönen Küste zum Foveaux Memorial und zum Stirling Point und zurück zum Bluff Hill. Wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter, denn trotz Wolken, konnte sich die Sonne ein paar Mal durchsetzen und wir konnten die nahen gelegenen Inseln (Dog Island / Bird Island and Ruapuke Island) sehen.

In Invercargill we found our next campground at the Peninsula Otatara. After sleeping late, we did a sightseeing tour through the town Invercargill ourselves. We had a nice stroll through the Queenspark and their nice rose gardens. We saw the old water tower, the town’s landmark with a height of 42,6 metres and we had a café and a very good hot chocolate at “The seriously good chocolate company”. In the afternoon, we went to a hill from another Peninsula called “The Bluff”. We enjoyed the view from up there of the Islands nearby (Dog Island / Bird Island and Ruapuke Island). We were lucky with the weather, so we made a walk along the nice coast from the Foveaux Memorial to the Stirling Point and back to the Bluff Hill.

Queenstown

Die Nacht in Invercargill war meega kalt und als wir das Zelt zusammengepackt haben und in Richtung Queenstown fuhren, sahen wir, dass die Bergspitzen der Südalpen bereits weiss waren. Es hatte in dieser Nacht also geschneit. Brrrr. In Queenstown haben wir einen herzigen Campingplatz direkt in der Stadt gefunden, von wo aus wir zu Fuss in die Stadt und zum Queenstown Hill mit schöner Aussicht laufen konnten. An diesem Nachmittag genossen wir die Sonne an der schönen Promenade der lebendigen und sehr touristischen Stadt Queenstown. Am Abend gönnten wir uns eine riesige Fleischplatte im Restaurant «Flames». Das Fleisch war soooo gut!!! Am nächsten Morgen trafen wir Lindsay, die wir auf den Fiji Inseln kennengelernt hatten, zum Brunch. Was für ein fröhliches und herzliches Wiedersehen. Wir hatten uns so viel zu erzählen, so dass wir uns entschieden, gemeinsam entlang dem See bis zu Bob’s Cove, einem sehr blauen Seearm, zu laufen. Zurück in Queenstown genossen wir unsere Bye Bye Ice-Cream und nachdem wir uns von Lindsay verabschieden mussten, holten wir Saby vom Flughafen ab. Eine weitere sehr emotionale Begrüssung folgte an diesem Tag. Es war sooo toll Saby nach 3 langen Monaten wieder zu sehen. Ein richtiger Knuddeltag!!! 😊 Zurück beim Camping hatten auch wir drei uns sooo viel zu erzählen, so dass wir den restlichen Abend gemütlich bei einem Bier und sehr feinen Omeletten verbrachten. Um die wunderschöne Landschaft rund um Queenstown so richtig zu erleben, entschieden wir uns am nächsten Tag gemeinsam auf den Ben Lomond Summit zu wandern. Trotz anstrengendem und sehr windigem Aufstieg war die Aussicht von oben auf die Südalpen, den Lake Wakatipu und die Stadt Queenstown bombastisch. Nach der Wanderung erlebten wir eine wunderschöne Fahrt über den «Lindis Pass» nach Twizel bei Sonnenuntergang.

The night in Invercargill was bloody cold and after we had packed up our tent, we drove to Queenstown. On the road we had a nice view of the Southern Alps and we saw, that the mountaintops were already white. It means, that it was snowing this night! In Queenstown we found a very cute Campground very close to the city centre. We could walk to the centre and to the Queenstown Hill with a nice view. This afternoon we enjoyed the sun at the nice esplanade of the very lively and touristic town Queenstown. In the evening we treated ourselves a very nice meat platter at the restaurant “Flames”. The meat was soo delicious! The next morning, we met Lindsay again for Brunch. It was an awesome small Fiji-Reunion and we had so many stories to tell each other. That’s why we made a stroll along the nice lake to the Bob’s Cave with very blue and clear water. Back in Queenstown we had a Bye Bye Ice-Cream with Lindsay and after saying goodbye we picked up Saby (our friend from Zug) from the airport. It was such an emotional greeting and it was amazing to meet Saby again after 3 months. We’re so happy to continue travelling with her now. A real cuddle day!!! 😊 Back in our campground we had to tell each other so many things, so we enjoyed the evening cooking pancakes and drinking beer. The next day, we decided to explore the nice landscape around Queenstown. That’s why we hiked up to the Ben Lomond Summit. It was a very exhausting and cold windy hike up, but really worth it for this amazing view over the Southern Alps, the Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown. After this hike, we had a beautiful drive during the sunset through the “Lindis Pass” to Twizel.
